Firstly, let's explain what the NDIS is. It stands for 'National Disability Insurance Scheme' and is described as a program that 'provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community, and an improved quality of life'... 'This includes supporting approximately 80,000 children with developmental delay, ensuring they receive supports early so that they achieve the best outcomes throughout their lives.' (Source: NDIS).
NDIS Eligibility Requirements
There are certain eligibility requirements to get access to the NDIS, which include:
age,
residence,
disability and
early intervention requirements.
Let's explore 'early intervention requirements' further...
Early Interventions Support for Children & Families, Funded by the NDIS
Children may be eligible for some NDIS funded supports now, to reduce their need for future support. Children younger than 6, with a 'developmental delay,' may be eligible for the NDIS if they meet the early interventions eligibility requirements.
'Developmental delay' occurs where a delay in a child’s development is observed. It can occur when a child finds it difficult to do everyday things that other children their age are able to do. The NDIS can provide 'early interventions' funding support, to eligible children with developmental delay(s), to become NDIS Participants and receive the support they need to achieve goals aligned to developmental concerns.
How Do You Apply For Early Interventions Support For Your Child Under The NDIS?
Access to early intervention supports funded under the NDIS is via submission of a 'NDIS Access Request'. Here is detailed guidance regarding 'Applying for NDIS Access' (source: NDIS).
